A Private Member’s bill, the Therapeutic Goods Amendment (Repeal of Ministerial responsibility for approval of RU486) Bill is now before Parliament. The bill seeks to remove responsibility for approval for abortifacients like RU486 from the Minister for Health and Ageing and return it to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

The Reproductive Health Alliance and Reproductive Choice Australia have produced this report to articulate the variety of robust arguments in favour of giving regulatory oversight of RU486 to the TGA; to document the scientific and medical community’s support for access to the drug in Australia and to counter a range of misrepresentations of the drug’s uses, effects and safety record.
